THE SANSOM BENCH
Timeline: April 2020 (1 week)
Project Brief: Design and create renderings for a piece of furniture to be submitted to the Tangen Hall Furniture Competition. Tangen Hall is to be the home of all aspiring entrepreneurs on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Sansom is designed in the aesthetic language of the 40th Street Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1866, which used to stand just across the street from where Tangen Hall is now being erected. The fingertip tenon joints (the detailing on the bench surface) offer an engaging visual experience and are reminiscent of the detailing surrounding the old church windows. The legs bring to mind the shape of the keystone at the apex of the doorways and archways.
